WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?

Life coaching is a form of coaching and so is neither therapy nor counselling, but a problem-solving approach to whatever level of life quality you wish to focus on. I see my practice as the strategic application of commonsense. I don't simply use buzzwords to temporarily boost your mood, rather I take a pragmatic perspective on your values, goals and real-life situation to effect lasting change.

WHERE DOES CONSULTATION TAKE PLACE?

Scheduling a consultation at your work/ study space or home enables me to see you in situ and to more effectively appreciate the patterns of value that compose your life situation.  Although I would recommend that our consultation is private, I also recommend that if we are meeting in your home you have someone else there so you can relax. If people don't have an office at home they often prefer to meet me in the kitchen (outside mealtimes!) to free up the livingroom. If you would like advice on simplifying,  decluttering and focusing the use of rooms at home or work please make sure that others have given permission for us to view these rooms.

DO YOU DO FASHION TIPS AND FENG-SHUI?

My practice is advisory so although it may well lead to decisions on interior decorating, I won't be getting out the paint and rollers but rather asking such questions as:

1 what do you want to do in this space?

2 what do you want your guests to do in this space?

3 how can the current layout/ furniture be best utilised to enable the desired use for yourself and for your guests?

4 what needs to come into this space and what needs to leave it in order for this desired use to be facilitated?

Consultations may also lead to decisions on personal style and grooming.

My questions here may include:

1 clothes communicate a message - what do you want your style to say?

2 what do you feel your current style may be saying?

3 if these messages differ, which items of your current wardrobe are communicating what you want, which could be altered or recombined well - and which are not working for you?

WHAT ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS?

If I feel you would really benefit from in-depth counselling, I recommend this rather than life coaching. It may be that we can work together on other aspects of your life while you focus deeply on a particular one with a counselor, or you may need time to get deeper emotional clarity before taking on my more pragmatic, problem-solving view. Questions I ask abut relationships include:

Are you speaking to people, daily, who are not in a professional relationship with you? Are you happy with the frequency and quality of your time with family, with members of your household, with your partner, with members of your community? Are they? Do you feel sufficiently fulfilled by your job and valued in your place of work? Are you respected by your partner? Is your partner respected by your family and your community?

ARE YOU VERY ACADEMIC?

I love learning! I also know how it feels when your learning style doesn't match your tutor's teaching style. So I have lots of practical advice for study skills and work/ social life/ study balance. I'm also a huge fan of lifelong learning - which can take many forms and keeps the mind active. So I may ask:  When was the last time you learned something new? Do you regularly solve problems? Would you like to improve your English/ Scots/ Gaelic/ Foreign Languages/ Arithmetic/ Computing Skills/ DIY – or would you like to teach these skills to others?

ARE YOU VERY STRICT? AM I SIGNING UP FOR BOOTCAMP HERE?

I believe that finding your willpower is very important. Self-esteem doesn't need to be dependent on moods, which change constantly. I provide gentle and firm encouragement you along the path you have decided to follow, when you need it. My focus on mood food, daylight and exercise can really help to give you a brighter outlook on a cloudy day. Real change of real circumstances is what I focus on, with these 3 prerequisites:

1 value the desired situation

(which includes identifying it and focusing on it)

2 devalue the present situation

(if you're too comfortable where you are, you'll never move on!)

3 support the transition

(to reduce risk and ensure stability through the change)

ARE YOU RELIGIOUS? IS THIS SOME CREEPY CONVERSION THING?

We each have our own faith or philosophy and I don't see it as my job to influence yours. Some people simply want more efficiency in their lives; others would like to live more justly, locally and globally. There are people who feel very passionate abut issues of equality and diversity. I believe that in learning how to live in harmony, it's often necessary to be aware of conflict, complicity and reconciliation. Empowerment can include assertiveness and what helps with that is to be convinced that you're doing the right thing, which might involve some soul-searching. Rather than 'religious', some people may name harmonious values as 'ecological' - bringing peace to people and to the planet.
